Scholarship for Advanced Music Study

College students, up to age 27, enrolled in a music program in any Central Ohio school are eligible to compete — all instruments and voice. Information will be mailed to college professors and will be available on our website prior to the competition. Winners are required to perform on a public concert with Women in Music – Columbus at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012.

Three winners will be chosen. The First Place winner will receive a $1,500 award; the Second Place winner will receive a $750 award, and the Third Place Winner will receive a $300 award. Local professors, professionals and conductors make up the panel of three to four judges.

Eligibility

  • Former first place winners are not eligible.
  • Candidates may compete in voice, piano, winds, strings, or percussion
  • Candidate age limit: 27 years old
  • Both male and female candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Candidates must be enrolled in a music degree program at a college or university in Franklin County or its adjacent counties: Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union.

Repertoire Requirements

  • Competitors should choose three selections from varying time periods such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary.  Performing two selections from the same time period is acceptable; however these musical selections should vary in style.  Vocalists’ repertoire choices should include at least one art song.
  • All repertoire will be screened prior to the acceptance of the application.  If performing a sonata, only one movement is required. Candidates may choose the first selection to be performed.  The judges may stop the proceedings at any time and ask to hear other selections or parts thereof.

Memorization:

Memorization  is required for vocalists and pianists and  is optional for all other instruments.

Other Requirements:

Candidate must provide one copy of each work for use by the judges. Photocopies are not acceptable and are cause for automatic disqualification.  Candidate must provide his/her own accompanist and may not be accompanied by his/her teacher.

The application should include:

  • A completed application form.
  • Written verification from the college confirming current enrollment in a music degree program.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $25 through check or money order payable to Women In Music—Columbus.

Judges:

A jury panel of outstanding professional musicians will judge the auditions. In the event a reasonable standard of performance has not been achieved the judges may withhold the award. The judges’ comment sheets will be sent to all candidates. The winner will be notified by phone within twenty-four hours following the audition.

This application must be filled out in its entirety and returned to the auditions coordinator. Postmark deadline is February 13, 2012. Statement of verification of student status in a college music degree program and a non-refundable application fee of $25 must be included with the application form (make check or money order payable to Women In Music – Columbus).
