Cantilena

On behalf of Women in Music–Columbus, and artistic director Eileen Davis, I welcome you to the fourth season of Cantilena Concerts. We return this year to a series of three concerts, made possible in part by the generosity of the Kenneth L. Coe and Jack Barrow Fund of the Columbus Foundation. We are pleased to have you with us in our new location as we present excellent performances of music not often heard elsewhere. For the 2009-2010 season, the Cantilena Series will be held at The Huntington Recital Hall of Capital University while the Columbus Museum of Art is under renovation.

Our first group, the Brasil Guitar Duo, juxtaposes European contrapuntal classical literature with traditional Brazilian folk and dance music. We believe you will find that these worlds are not as far apart as they appear! This concert marks the first of what will be many occasions that Cantilena Concerts welcomes international touring artists.

Later in November, our ever-popular holiday concert returns with a wide variety of performers. The Jones/Norton Duo, flute and harp, opens the program, followed by the Nina Choir of the Columbus Children’s Choir, prepared by Jayne Wenner and directed by Sandra Mathias. The Choir will join baritone soloist Eric McKeever and pianist Eileen Huston for Rob Kapilow’s Polar Express. Mr. McKeever will finish the program with a group of his favorite spirituals.

Finally, our March concert centers around the operatic tradition of using the lower female voices to present certain male characters — ‘pants roles’. WOSU host and font of operatic knowledge, Christopher Purdy, emcees, while mezzo-soprano Carolyn Redman and sopranos Jennifer Whitehead and Tamara Seckel provide the music. Expect a few laughs, and a few eye openers, along the way.
