2012 Composer’s Forum

The annual Composer’s Forum of WMC was held Saturday, May 5, at 2:00 p.m. at Worthington Baptist Church. Four composers were represented. Jerry Casey played two choral numbers from her most recent CD. A small reception followed the concert. This is the fourth year for the Composer’s Forum concert. We look forward to another successful forum next year.

Huntington Recital – Sunday April 15th

The ladies of WMC hope for sunshine and warm weather draw you out to Capital University this Sunday to support their efforts in another delightful Huntington Recital.

A special treat includes the debut of a work by Peggy Glanville Hicks (1912), born in Melbourne, Australia. This piece will feature nine of our talented musicians. In addition, three sopranos will serenade guests with their individual selections.

The recital begins at 3pm in the Huntington Recital Hall. Admission is free. Please attend.

WMC is proud to premiere for the first time in the USA, This Light by Suzanne Parry John (b. 1980), a composer currently residing in Linlithgow, Scotland. The piece is inspired by John’s deep affection for Lorca’s poetry, especially his Sonnets of Dark Love.

Don’t miss this exciting event. Admission is complimentary.

Cancellation Notice for Mary Lane Memorial Violin Competition on Oct 22, 2011

Dear Participant,

Please note the cancellation of the Mary Lane Memorial Violin Competition which was due to be held on October 22, 2011 at Capital University, Columbus OH. You will be reimbursed the full $30 entry fee and will be receiving your refund via U.S. Mail within the next few weeks.

The reason for canceling this event is due to lack of participant interests. We would like to invite you to re-apply again next year for our Mary Lane Memorial Violin Competition, which is scheduled to be held in Fall of 2012. WMC also offers several other competitions that you maybe interested in applying for. Please visit our website for more information www.womeninmusiccolumbus.com.

On behalf of the committee and myself, I would like to apologize for the cancellation. I know all of you have put in hard work to practice and memorize, but this is something which is beyond our control. We hope you understand the situation.

First annual Mary Lane Memorial Violin Competition

Women in Music – Columbus is holding its first annual Mary Lane Memorial Violin Competition. This competition is for violin students, who live or take lessons in Central Ohio (Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Pickerington, Union and Madison counties), between the ages of 16-24. Contestants aged 18 and older do not have to be enrolled in an instutuion of higher education or be a music major in order to apply for this competition. Mus be ages 16-24 before October 1, 2011.

A prize of $1,500 will be awarded to each age category with an opportunity for both winners to perform in a public concert on November 6, 2011 at 2pm in the Huntington Recital Hall at Capital University.

Women In Music-Columbus partners with Godman Guild

On Thursday June 2nd, several members of WMC performed at a private event held at Godman Guild. A big thank you goes to Barb Ford, Kim Kramer, Meredith Wolfe, Nikki Uhas and the Columbus Cellos.

A representative from Godman Guild says “Thanks to Women in Music-Columbus for making our event great. You added a lot of class!”

Godman Guild Association is a community based social service agency, modeled after the traditional settlement house concept and has been serving the near northside communities of Columbus since 1898. It is the oldest of seven settlement houses in Columbus. The mission of Godman Guild is to promote strong families and strong communities in Columbus, Ohio primarily focusing the near northside. We do this by offering a comprehensive continuum of services to individuals and families who live within our service area. The Guild also owns and operates Camp Mary Orton (CMO), a 167-acre facility in Worthington, Ohio, which provides opportunities for children and families of the Guild service area to relax and enjoy nature. The Leadership and Challenge Center (LCC) at CMO enables children and adults from throughout Central Ohio to extend their ability to achieve, lead others, and become reliable team players through ground initiatives and high ropes courses.

Member looking for rehearsal/practice space

We are proud to have a new member in our organization. She is also fairly new to the Columbus area. Living in an apartment setting and working full time makes it difficult for musicians to practice. In an effort to help ease her transition, please share any suggestions you may have on where local musicians (non students) can practice. Thank you.

A New Season of Huntington Room Recitals

A New Season of Huntington Room Recitals begins Sunday April 1oth. Please attend this free performance at 3pm at Capital University in the Huntington Recital Hall. The program includes a charming work by our very own Billie Nastelin. Bach, Bizet and Schubert pieces are also sure to delight.

Women In Music-Columbus is proud to showcase a group of talented young musicians. A winners’ recital on Sunday, March 27 at 3pm in the Huntington Recital Hall at Capital University. The recital will include performances by winners of the Young Artist Competition as well as the winners of the Scholarship Auditions. This concert is free and open to the public.
